Meeting, Dan Choi, and an Announcement!

posted Jan 26, 2012 11:14 AM by Elizabeth Casswell

Hello Wonderful Gay/Straight Student Alliance Members!

Meeting Monday
Our first meeting of the semester will be THIS MONDAY, at 4:00pm, in Hill University Center room 412. We are going to have meetings every other week, and alternate between Mondays at 4:00, and Thursdays at 6:00pm. As always, there will be food (thanks to the USGA!), and everyone is welcome!

Dan Choi Tonight
Don't forget to come to see Lt. Dan Choi at HUC Alumni Auditorium TONIGHT AT 8:00. BRING FRIENDS, this is a huge deal and we need to show UAB that there is a demand for this type of programming, as well as show Dan Choi our respect by packing the house!!!

Announcement!
It is with a sad heart that I announce that Whitney Julian has stepped down as V.P. of the GSSA. Whitney contributed a tremendous amount of hard work and enthusiasm to the GSSA, and I consider her to be one of the most important change agents at UAB in 2011.
The Executive Board of the GSSA unanimously voted to promote Bri Bruce to the position as our new VP. Bri Bruce is a long time member of the executive board. We are so excited to have Bri as the VP, she has shown with her actions over the last year, to be committed, enthusiastic and extremely competent. If you have a chance, congratulate her (or give her your sympathy, as you see fit.)

Thank you all for everything and I can not wait to see you tonight!!

Discriminatory Harassment Policy is UP!

posted Nov 30, 2011 12:32 PM by Elizabeth Casswell

Today is a day to celebrate! Thanks to the hard work of a LARGE group of faculty, staff and students over the past year, we have succeeded with one of our major goals! The new harassment policy is up, and we could not be more elated, especially with the following quotes: "In addition, UAB prohibits, and will not tolerate, discrimination against individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression."
AND
"UAB prohibits, and will not tolerate, discrimination in admission, educational programs, and other student matters on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, national origin, disability unrelated to program performance, veteran status, or genetic or family medical history."
AND
"In keeping with its commitment to maintaining an environment that is free of unlawful discrimination and in keeping with its legal obligations, UAB prohibits unlawful harassment (and discouraging conduct that, while not unlawful, could reasonably be considered unwelcome).  Discriminatory harassment of any kind is not appropriate at UAB, whether it is sexual harassment or harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, national origin, disability unrelated to program performance, veteran status, genetic or family medical history, or any factor that is a prohibited consideration under applicable law."

HUGE Show of Support from Dr. Garrison

posted Nov 13, 2011 4:01 PM by Elizabeth Casswell

Dr. Garrison, the President of UAB, created the following video. Among other amazing things, Dr. Garrison says,

"The LGBT community is an integral part of [UAB's] robust diversity,
it helps move this university forward, and it is
on this campus."

The GSSA also received a letter* from Dr. Dale, VP of Equity and Diversity, this week, with a detailed list of all of the initiatives in progress all over campus to create a more LGBT positive environment for faculty, students, and staff.

This is an incredible step forward for the GSSA and for UAB!

Gender and Sexuality Minor!

posted Nov 13, 2011 3:21 PM by Elizabeth Casswell

Dr. Sharlach is the new director of the womens' studies program. She is the process of re-casting the minor into a new program covering gender and sexuality. She has support from the dean, the program would still have to go through the Board of Trustees.
The minor is still being planned, but the long-term plans are to create different "tracks" in the minor, one of which could possibly be "Queer Studies" and/or Womens' Studies and others.

We need to show student interest in this minor! There has been ample research that minors such as this are of a huge benefit to the LGBT student population, help students develop positive self-identities, and increase retention, recruitment and success of LGBT students.

If you have any additional questions, or would like to talk to her directly, please contact Dr. Sharlach at sharlach@uab.edu

To show your interest in the minor, go to the form here:
Please pass this on to any other student you think might be interested!

Victory Congressional Internship

posted Nov 5, 2011 4:33 PM by Elizabeth Casswell

The Gay & Lesbian Leadership Institute's Victory Congressional Internship is developing the next generation of out public leaders. Each semester, they are bringing outstanding LGBT college students to Washington, D.C., for an intensive leadership program, including:

  • A semester-long Congressional internship with a member of the LGBT Equality Caucus or a LGBT-friendly member of U.S. Congress to learn firsthand about the federal legislative process
  • An educational and leadership development program to learn about the legislative process and careers in the policy-making process
  • A community service project

AWESOME GSSA Meeting Friday

posted Nov 5, 2011 11:45 AM by Elizabeth Casswell

11/11/11 2:00-4:00pm HHB104

We are going to have the best meeting ever!

1. Dr. Sharlach from the Political Science Department is going to come talk to us about a new inter-disciplinary minor, "Gender, Sexuality, and Health." She will talk to us about what the minor would consist of. Our job is to let her know if we can show student interest in the minor.

2. We will also have Mary Hooks from Southerners On New Ground (SONG). "SONG believes all our identities, issues and lives are connected across race, class, culture, gender and sexuality. SONG is a membership-based, Southern regional organization made up of working class, people of color, immigrants, and rural LGBTQ people. We have a vision a world where the 3rd shift factory worker and the drag queen at the bar down the block see their lives as connected and are working together for liberation."

The GSSA at UAB meetings seek to provide a welcoming environment for all, a great place to meet new friends, opportunities to be involved and learn about topics pertinent to the LGBT community.

As always, everyone is welcome, and we will have FREE FOOD (thanks to the USGA!)
